| With this album, I wanted to write some music that weren't exactly "songs" in the traditional sense. I was also trying to avoid a lot of other things as well, including sounding overly focused in any particular genre, so I therefore threw some strangely "bitter" things into the mix to give it a somewhat coarser texture.
I feel the record successfully captures the essence of "Space Jazz" without any clear references to the genre. On first hearing, one can see the connection with Miles Davis, but at the same time it comports with the spacey feel of the entire album. I was not purposeful in any of the writing, rather playing whatever I felt like playing, without any reverence to the rudiments of songwriting or any specific genre. I was merely composing music in an additive way. I had no preconceived notions about "Miles From Mars". The only thing I had to go on was that I wanted to stay with the space concept. The adding of the trumpet was not a well thought out decision. It just happened, and it turned out to be "space jazz". It is my feeling that music is not necessarily a question of organizing sound with melody, harmony and rhythm. There can also be philosophical and political positions that affect the sound as well. It's those positions that define the parameters of what you'll eventually do and what you'll avoid. In this case I wanted to avoid writing traditional songs. It's not that I dislike songs, in fact, a large part of my work are pop songs. I wanted to take into consideration how this work would fit into the large picture. One of the questions I ask before I start writing is, "Does anyone want it, and if so how will it fit into their world. What does it mean beyond just being another CD in their CD collection." It is my hope that this music has some enduring value in people's lives. |
